Manufacturing

Guinea is considered one of the world's most underindustrialized nations with the sector accounting for less than 4.6 percent of Gross Domestic Product (G,DP). At present manufacturing activity consists of:

• public enterprises with large staffs, producing at only 1520 percent of capacity
• approximately 360 small private concerns, engaged for the most part in producing beverages, bread, brickmaking, carpentry, and boilermaking/metalwork
• approximately 10,000 small non-industrial units employing nome 25,000 individuals in informal status in a very wide range of occupations

In view of the Guinean governmentis commitment to privatization, public spending on the manufacturing nector is expected to remain low in 1994-96. Industrial value added is forecast to increase from $76 million in 1993 to $88 million in 1996, retaining its current status of 4.6 percent of GDP.
